This is a somewhat moody piece best described as a dark, romantic rhapsody (Rhapsody in Black?), with a hint of spice. It is written in G minor, in 4/4 time. After a repeated eight bar theme (using only two chords to support the minor/diminished treble note sequence), a second eight-bar theme is introduced to a simple, constant, throbbing and heavy walking bass/chord structure. Treble and bass parts are then reversed, the treble carrying the heavy chords while the bass takes another form of the dark melody until the second theme is restated. Treble triplets and jazzy stabbed bass chords follow like a startled interlude before the original theme is softly restated. The finale comes a little unexpectedly in the shape of inverted G minor arpeggios. It is ideally suited to Stradella bass instruments.
