Gary
Daverne was born in Auckland, New Zealand, January 1939, educated
at Auckland University, Auckland Teachers Training College
and Trinity College of Music, London.
He started his music in a brass band playing the euphonium.
Two years later changing to the clarinet and percussion achieving
LRSM and LTCL (clarinet performers). During the early sixties
while playing saxophone in top New Zealand Rock Groups, he
studied piano and became a top line jazz pianist. He continued
playing in symphony orchestras as a clarinettist and professional
percussionist.
He moved to London to study composition and conducting at
the Royal Academy of Music and the Trinity College of Music
gaining FTCL in composition.
As a qualified Secondary School teacher in Economics, Accounting
and Music, he taught in Auckland and London between 1962 and
1977. In 1978 he was selected as "Composer in Schools"
for the New Zealand Education Department, a position he held
for two years. During that time he composed many songs and
musicals for children. These have remained very popular and
are regularly performed, as are the extensive library of compositions
for the accordion, symphony orchestra and the piano.
Gary Daverne is signed to Ernest Deffner Publications (New
York) as an in-house arranger/composer and they publish and
distribute his accordion compositions world-wide and through
their agent in Germany, Preissler Music.
International publishing contracts are held with two Dutch
companies for the publishing of all his piano music, children's
musicals and his orchestral music including symphonic wind
band transcriptions.
A compact disc featuring some of his many orchestral compositions,
and played by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, is available
on the BMG label which includes Rhapsody for Accordion and
Orchestra. Also available on the BMG label is a CD of his
original concert music for the accordion.
His arrangements for accordion orchestra are used extensively
by the Air New Zealand Accordion Orchestra and received dozens
of standing ovations around the world for their excellence.
Gary has been a guest conductor on 5 International Goodwill
Tours with the Air New Zealand Accordion Orchestra who have
featured his compositions for accordion on these tours.
He was invited to be guest conductor of "Rhapsody for
Accordion and Orchestra" at the International Piano Accordion
Competition and Festival in New York (August 1988) and at
the Prize giving of the Coupe Mondiale International Accordion
Solo Competition held in Germany in 1990. Gary Daverne has
performed this work over 120 times world-wide, usually with
soloist Harley Jones.
