Born in Catania
in 1972, Sebastiano Cali began to study classical piano with Francesco
Zappalà at the Conservatory "Vincenzo Bellini" (Catania)
and graduated cum laude in 1996.
At the same time he was interested in Early Music, particularly in
keyboard repertoire from the XVII and XVIII centuries, as well as
in organ studies relative to early keyboard instruments.
He also has a passion for accordion and has been playing in several
occasions both in theatre plays, as well as in concerts.
1992 - Attended a course in organology and maintenance, with
Ugo Casiglia, at the "Renaissance Music Week" in Erice (Italy).
1996/1997 - Studied with Emilia Fadini at "Scuola Musicale
di Milano" (fortepiano and clavichord).
1999 - Graduated in Harpsichord at the Conservatory "Vincenzo
Bellini" (Catania), where he studied with Salvatore Carchiolo.
1999/2000 - Studied harpsichord with Bob van Asperen at the
"Sweelinck Conservatory" in Amsterdam.
2001 - Won the 2nd prize at the international harpsichord competition
"Dino Caravita" in Fusignano (Italy).
As a performer he attended masterclasses with:
Bob van Asperen (harpsichord); Emilia Fadini (clavichord and fortepiano);
J. B. Christensen (basso continuo); Gordon Murray (harpsichord); Joachim
Achucarro (piano); Paul Badura-Skoda (piano)
He performed, among others, with Luigi Mangiocavallo (Concerts for
three harpsichords and orchestra, by J. S. Bach) and Alain Lombard
(concerts by A. Vivaldi).
As a maintainer and tuner of early keyboard instruments, he worked
for, among others: I Solisti Veneti, l'Europa Galante, Andrea Coen,
i Musici, i Solisti Aquilani, i Virtuosi di Mosca, i Wiener Barock,
Gustav Leonhardt, Fabio Bonizzoni.
As an accordionist he has performed in theatre together with the actress
Guja Jelo, in the monologue "Le cicale mi hanno reso pazza",
produced by Giorgio Albertazzi.
During recent years he has been working piano tuning and piano maintenance,
attending regularly meetings and conferences held by A.I.A.R.P. (associazione
italiana accordatori riparatori pianoforti).
He also makes harpsichords and other early keyboard instruments, using
his knowledge of the organology and keyboard instruments history.
