Lady John Scott wrote the tender melody, the lyrics by the suitor of Robert Laurie's daughter. It appeared around 1838. In spite of the song in which he claimed: " I'd lay me doon an' dee," she married another. The song, sung with Scottish dialect, was popular among British soldiers during the Crimean War.
