At Sunday afternoonıs Family Orchestral Concert, 19 November 2000 at the Aotea Centre, with the Auckland Symphony Orchestra, their conductor Gary Daverne was presented with the prestigious Scroll of Honour by the Variety Artists Club of New Zealand, quote ­ "for his dedication and skill in his craft and for bringing the joy of orchestral music to the people. We acknowledge his achievements and salute his professionalism."

Biography

Gary Daverne was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) in the 1996 Queen's Birthday Honours in recognition of his services to music both within New Zealand and overseas.

Gary has held the position of Musical Director of the Auckland Symphony Orchestra, since its foundation, in 1975.

As an international conductor, Gary has conducted some of the world's major orchestras including London's Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Turkish State Symphony Orchestra of Adana, the Orchestra Esproarte in Portugal and the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra.

Conducting Highlights

  • In 1975 was appointed Musical Director for the 1975 New Zealand Waitangi Day Celebration attended by her Majesty the Queen of England and other members of the British Royal Family.
  • In 1988, conducted at all the major concert halls in Mainland China.
  • In 1990, conducted extensively throughout America including New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
  • In 1992 he conducted concerts in Hawaii, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Northern Italy.
  • In 1993, conducted a premiere performance of his, A Pocket Overture, at the Royal Festival Hall, London.
  • In 1993, conducted a radio broadcast recording for Stuttgart Radio, Germany.
  • In 1994 he conducted a concert tour of 20 concerts on the north east coast of America, playing in Toronto, New York, Boston, Washington, Albany and a few smaller centres like Lake Placid, Hudson and Lake George.
  • In 1994, two concerts in Turkey with the State Symphony Orchestra of Adana where two of his original works were performed, Rhapsody for Accordion and Orchestra and Concert Overture "Youth of Auckland".
  • In 1995, conducted the London's Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) at Orchestrelle '95 in Christchurch Park, Ipswich, England.
  • In 1996, conducted the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra in Christchurch's outdoor spectacular, 'Classical Sparks' concert, to an audience of over 120,000 people.
  • In 1997, Musical Director for the Military Tattoo in New Plymouth with a cast of over 1500, involving the Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force Bands, 160 pipers, including the Band of the Black Watch, local brass bands, orchestra and a 300 voice choir. Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture was the real show stopper played by 240 brass and wind players and the Army heavy artillery.
  • In 1997, conducted a subcription series of concerts with the Taiwan Symphony Orchestra in Taiwan, symphony concerts in Jakarta, Indonesia and four concerts in Kuala Lumpur, with the National Symphony Orchestra of Malaysia, in a programme of film and show music.
  • In 1998 conducted the Royal Belgian Guides Harmony Orchestra, in Brussels, to a capacity audience.
  • In August 1999 Gary was the first New Zealander to be invited to China to conduct the prestigious Shanghai Symphony Orchestra.
In 1997 as resident conductor with the Auckland Symphony Orchestra, Gary conducted five Family Concerts, The Symphony Goes to Broadway, an Evening of British Music with a 100 Voice Choir and soloists. Also a series of performances of a Night with Gilbert and Sullivan featuring choir, soloists and orchestra. Over a thousand people were turned away from his Family Christmas Concert, in December with the Auckland Symphony Orchestra.

In March 2000, Gary will be special guest conductor with the TAA Y2K Festival Accordion Orchestra, in Dallas, Texas.

He is well known in television, radio and the recording industry, as a composer, arranger and musical director. As a record producer, he has produced over 40 record albums and has one "platinum" and two "gold" record albums to his credit including the latest CD by New Zealand Maori entertainer / singer, Sir Howard Morrison. He is highly regarded in the advertising and film industry for his writing and production of over 600 advertising jingles and film sound tracks.

Gary was the arranger/producer for New Zealand country singer, Kylie Harris, winner of the 1998 "Country Album of the Year" Award.

As well as his overseas travels, Gary also conducts youth orchestras, music schools, community orchestras and stage shows in many parts of New Zealand.


Gary Daverne was born in Auckland, New Zealand, January 1939, educated at Auckland University, Auckland Teachers Training College and Trinity College of Music, London.

He started his music in a brass band playing the euphonium. Two years later changing to the clarinet and percussion achieving LRSM and LTCL (clarinet performers). During the early sixties while playing saxophone in top New Zealand Rock Groups, he studied piano and became a top line jazz pianist. He continued playing in symphony orchestras as a clarinettist and professional percussionist.

He moved to London to study composition and conducting at the Royal Academy of Music and the Trinity College of Music gaining FTCL in composition.

As a qualified Secondary School teacher in Economics, Accounting and Music, he taught in Auckland and London between 1962 and 1977. In 1978 he was selected as "Composer in Schools" for the New Zealand Education Department, a position he held for two years. During that time he composed many songs and musicals for children. These have remained very popular and are regularly performed, as are the extensive library of compositions for the accordion, symphony orchestra and the piano.

Gary Daverne is signed to Ernest Deffner Publications (New York) as an in-house arranger/composer and they publish and distribute his accordion compositions world-wide and through their agent in Germany, Preissler Music.

International publishing contracts are held with two Dutch companies for the publishing of all his piano music, children's musicals and his orchestral music including symphonic wind band transcriptions.

A compact disc featuring some of his many orchestral compositions, and played by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, is available on the BMG label which includes Rhapsody for Accordion and Orchestra. Also available on the BMG label is a CD of his original concert music for the accordion.

His arrangements for accordion orchestra are used extensively by the Air New Zealand Accordion Orchestra and received dozens of standing ovations around the world for their excellence. Gary has been a guest conductor on 5 International Goodwill Tours with the Air New Zealand Accordion Orchestra who have featured his compositions for accordion on these tours.

He was invited to be guest conductor of "Rhapsody for Accordion and Orchestra" at the International Piano Accordion Competition and Festival in New York (August 1988) and at the Prize giving of the Coupe Mondiale International Accordion Solo Competition held in Germany in 1990. Gary Daverne has performed this work over 120 times world-wide, usually with soloist Harley Jones.
